Exercise isn’t just about staying fit anymore, it’s about playing, recovering and connecting––and real estate developers are changing how they design amenity spaces to reflect the new affinity for physical activity among Americans.
Since the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) began tracking more than 16 years ago, 2025 marks the highest level of physical activity with 80% of the U.S. population––around 241 million people––having participated in at least one sport or fitness endeavor in the past year.
Although it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where this push to move is coming from, factors such as increased awareness of health and mortality following the pandemic and a monumental generational shift in younger people prioritizing fitness––specifically via ‘gym culture’––are certainly noteworthy.
Pickleball player numbers surged to a whopping 19.4 million in 2024 and Pilates participation rose to 12.9 million––nearly 40% over five years.
